Rollers, treating.-A leather or other covered roller is ground and trued by a traversing grinding-wheel b and is mounted in driven chucks carried respectively by a fixed headstock d, and a movable headstock e mounted on a bed c pivoted to the machine frame a and adjustable towards or from the grinding-wheel by a screw c2. The fixed headstock comprises a casing c8 carrying a chuck-supporting spindle c5 abutting on a ball c6 and driven by gears c3, c4 from a shaft f mounted in the bed c. The movable headstock is adjustable along the bed c and comprises a casing e' carrying a chuck-supporting spindle e5 driven from the shaft f by gears e3, e4. The spindle e5 has at its inner end a ball and cup connection e7 e8 with a spindle e9 slidable in a sleeve e11 secured to the casing e1, a spring e12 pressing the spindle outwards. In order to insert the work, the spindle e5 is retracted by operation of a handle, which, in conjunction with cam-surfaces e15, e16, moves the spindle axially. For treating large diameter rollers more than two gears are employed in each headstock.
