Tension arrangements.-A device for tensioning elastic strands used in the manufacture of golf balls, or other strands, and having rotary members 37, 41 geared together and rotated by the passing thread, comprises a load 49, Fig. 1, supported by the strand 6 and adapted on variation of tension to vary the speed ratios of the members 37, 41 to compensate therefor. The strand is drawn by the rotating ball-core 1 from a bobbin 36 round pulleys 37, 59, 41. The pulley 37 is rigid with a conical disc 38 and is normally driven by the pulley 41 through a cone 42. On undue increase of tension the arm 40 is raised and the spring 43 relaxed to permit the lever 44 to rise and allow the clutch 38, 42 to slip. A dashpot 51 may be provided. In a modification, the strand passes successively round pulleys 53, 54, 59A, 60, Fig. 3, and thence to the wound package 1A. The pulleys 53, 54 carry inter-engaging spur gears and are geared thereby to a friction disc 56 which engages a friction disc on the pulley 60. On undue increase of tension the arm 40A rises and an arm 57, on which the pulleys 53, 54 and the disc 56 are mounted, swings outwards disengaging the disc 56 from that on the pulley- 60.
