Four - stroke - cycle engines; pumps, centrifugal.-In a radial, revolving cylinder engine inlet and exhaust is controlled by an annular ported plate 3 surrounding the cylinder heads. the joints between this plate and the heads being made by rings 17; the contacting surfaces between the plate and rings are spherical enabling the rings to adjust their position in two directions. The plate is attached by spokes 4 to a casing 5 enclosing gearing 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12, by means of which the plate is driven at a different rate to the speed of rotation of the cylinder block. The rings 17 are held against the plate by centrifugal force and may be by the pressure within the cylinder; in the latter case the ring is placed within the. opening 15 in the cylinder head 16. The space between the cylinder heads is filled by pieces 21, which embrace the heads by means of rings 22 formed on the pieces. These pieces also have spherical contacting surfaces to bear on to the plate 3, and are held up to the plate by centrifugal force and by 'the action of adjustable weights 28 on the ends of arms 27 connected bv links 26 to the pieces; the arms 27 are supported in rods 24 fast on the engine casing. To cool the ported plate, that part not occupied by ports is formed with ribs in the shape of scoops to direct air over the plate during the movement of the cylinders through the atmosphere. To assist in the withdrawal of the exhaust a plate 36 is fixed over the exhaust ports on the slide valve, vanes 38 being formed on the plate, between which vanes the exhaust passes and exerts rotational force on the plate. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) also describes the use of adjustable springs for holding up the rings 17 and a modified form of packing, wherein rings 17, 17a, Fig. 4a (Cancelled) are used inside and outside the cylinder head 16; the inner one has inclined ribs 17b which by the alternating flow of gases causes rotational movement of the ring and reduces wear. The outer ring 17a is held up by an adjustable plate spring 19a attached to a piece 21. Mixture is supplied from the hollow crank shaft to the crank case, whence it is drawn through pipes 30 on the suction stroke into the cylinder through the inlet port 7. The valve construction may be applied to stationary cylinders. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
