403,208. Discharge-tube signs; changing signs. LEBEDENKO, N., 10, Holsteinische Strasse, LEVY, R., 125, Rudolstõdterstrasse, both in Wilmersdorf, and ZEITLIN, W., 19, Oranienstrasse, both in Berlin. Oct. 17, 1932, No. 28940. Convention date, Oct. 15, 1931. [Classes 3 (i) and 3 (ii).] In a discharge lamp for use as a sign or the like wherein the sign is formed by a glow discharge the shape of which conforms to that of an electrode, all the electrodes are located externally of the lamp. The lamp may consist of a double-walled cylindrical vessel 22, Fig. 2, provided with a strengthening member 24. The discharge passes between electrodes 25 which determine the shape of the sign and an electrode 32 in the form of a network or a translucent coating. In a modification, the electrodes, 54, 55, Fig. 4, connected to both poles of the current supply are used for forming the signs. In a further modification, a lamp 78, Fig. 5, is provided with sign-forming electrodes 81, and the electrode of opposite polarity is formed by a liquid which may be adapted to flow to produce a similar movement of the discharge. Phosphorescent or fluorescent materials may be mixed with the liquid. A rubber pipe wound along the external surface of the inner wall may be used for the liquid which may include air bubbles. Removal of the electrodes is facilitated by mounting them on a rubber balloon which is placed in position and inflated. The electrode carriers may be moveable to obtain a travelling sign. High-frequency currents may be used to energise the lamp which may be connected to a Tesla transformer housed in the lamp socket or casing. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states also that one of the electrodes may be located within the lamp and consists of a translucent coating or of a network. The electrodes may be mounted on a tube formed of cardboard or of the material known under the Registered Trade Mark " Pertinax." This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
