472,761. Coking processes; materials for making coke. THIEMANN, W. H. A. (Pick, E.) March 27, 1936, No. 9200. [Classes 55 (i) and 55 (ii)] Bituminous coals are subjected, after crushing, to partial oxidation by being heated to about 100‹ C. in contact with gases containing oxygen, the oxidized fuel being briquetted without the addition of any extraneous binder and coked in a vertical retort through which the charge moves downwardly in counterflow to a current of heating gas. A lean material such as breeze or non-caking anthracitic coal may be added to the oxidized coal if desired, the object being to obtain a briquette which will retain its shape during coking. In an example, a long-flame gas coal is crushed to a maximum of 1 mm. grains heated for 20 minutes with air at 120‹ C. mixed with 7 per cent crushed semi-coke and briquetted. Apparatus suitable for briquetting the fuel is described in Specification 20679/14, [Class 50].
