[Class 110 (iii)] Variable-pitch blades are mounted in the rotor 1 of an axial-flow compressor by bearing surfaces 3a which do not take the radial thrust due to centrifugal force of the blades. The thrust is taken by torsionally flexible ties 4 anchored to a central hub 6. The ties 4 may be single or laminated strips or cables. As shown, a single strip 4 is secured in a slot in the blade root 3 by rivets 5 and in a slot 7 in the hub 6 by an end which is turned over a pin 8 and secured by rivets 9 accommodated in keyhole parts of the slot 7. Each blade is provided with a lever 13 splined to the inner end of the blade root and carrying a pin which enters a groove 11 in an axially adjustable ring 10.
