640,895. Velocity-modulated tubes. SPERRY CORPORATION. Oct. 9, 1942, No. 14225. Convention date, Oct. 23, 1941. Addition to 581,983. [Class 39 (i)] A frequency-multiplying velocity-modulated tube is provided with capacity-loading members on poles projecting from one (as in the parent Specification) or both walls of the buncher resonator. In one form the buncher 3, Fig. 1, is provided with tubes 7, 9 extending from the rigid end wall 5 and the flexible wall 20 respectively, and carrying capacityloading flanges 19, 21. Alternatively, a single conical flange 49, Fig. 2, may co-operate with conical end wall 51, which exerts a focusing effect on the beam; or the tube and end wall may carry nested sets of tubular members 34, Fig. 4, and 30, 32. The beam passes into harmonic resonator 11, Fig. 1, and on to a push-pull detector system 47 of the kind described in Specification 639,982. The cathode 1 may be flat with a flat or outwardly-curved grid 2, or concave with an inwardly curved grid. The concave tantalum cathode 155, Fig. 5, is carried from the grid structure 151 by thin wire struts 157 for heat insulation. Heater 171 is mounted within heat shield 165 .which is carried from the pinch by a number of struts 167 arranged to form a rigid truss structure. In another form, Fig. 8 (not shown), a harmonically tuned buffer resonator is interposed between the buncher resonator and the output resonator. The resonators are gangtuned by the mechanism described in Specification 640,896. Specifications 530,785, 534,144, 535,767, 554,574 and 581,972 also are referred to.
