An electrolytic condenser has an alkaline electrolyte, a silver anode and electrode separators of cellulose, the separators being compressed between the electrodes so as to suppress gaseous escape. The compression is preferably produced by plates 6, 6SP1/SP, Fig. 1, bolted together, and separated from the outer electrodes by ebonite plates 8, 8SP1/SP. Several condensers may be compressed by the one pair of plates 6, 6SP1/SP, Fig. 2 (not shown). The cathode is of iron, cadmium or cadmium plated iron.
