723,556. Seaming. CLARKE, D. May 14, 1953 [Feb. 19, 1952], No. 4353/52. Class 83 (4). A machine for closing tin plate containers comprises a support 10 carrying at its upper end a bracket 11 on which are mounted two rollers 1 and 2, the roller 2 being carried by an arm 12 pivotally mounted on the bracket so that the rollers can be moved apart to permit a container and cover to be placed-inposition between them, said rollers being provided with gearing at their upper ends so that rotation of the roller 1 by means of a handle 4 assists rotation of the roller 2. Rotation of roller 1 in one direction causes the roller 2 to swivel away from the roller 1 and rotation in the opposite direction causes the rollers to approach each other and grip a container and cover placed between them on an adjustable support 3, the container being rotated one revolution whilst the rollers form a seam as shown in Fig. V. A rubber band 6 is placed between the container and cover before seaming to provide an hermetic seal. Stops are provided to prevent the arm from passing over the dead-centre position during the seaming operation.
