A washing or bleaching composition contains a per-compound and an organic nitrile. The per-compound may be hydrogen peroxide or sodium perborate and the nitrile may be malonitrile, malonic acid amide nitrile, ethylene dicyanide, ethylene - diamino - tetra - acetic acid nitrile, tetramethylene dinitrile, nitrilotriacetic acid nitrile, benzonitrile, dimethyldiamino-succinic acid dinitrile, methylene bisimino acetonitrile, phthalonitrile, terephthalic acid nitrile or imino diacetonitrile. The compositions may also contain soap, sodium pyrophosphate, sodium tripolyphosphate, sodium carbonate, waterglass, sodium lauryl sulphate or a fibre-protecting compound described in Specification 784,911, [Group IV (c)].ALSO:A washing or bleaching composition contains a per-compound and an organic nitrile. The compositions may also contain a soap, sodium pyrophosphate, sodium tripolyphosphate, sodium carbonate, waterglass, sodium lauryl sulphate or a fibre-protecting compound described in Specification 784,911. Examples relate to the cleansing of cotton, regenerated cellulose and epsilon-caprolactam fabrics at 60 DEG to 65 DEG C. and at a pH of the order 9-10.
