801,627. Waveguide terminations. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Aug. 17, 1956 [Sept. 2, 1955], No. 25318/55. Class 40 (8). A terminated rectangular waveguide is coupled to a transmission line, the waveguide being tapered between the coupling and the termination. The guide may be tapered in the direction of the electric field or at rightangles thereto. As shown, the invention is applied to the duplex transmit-receive arrangement described in Specification 718,828 in which two orthogonally arranged probes 9, 10 are adapted to transfer energy betwen a pair of transmission lines and two H 01 modes polarized at right-angles in the guide. The probes are separated by an adjustable mode filter 19 comprising a number of parallel transverse wires. The termination 12 is axially adjustable and may be provided with a backing 13 of lossy material. It may be formed from a rectangular sheet of brass bent to provide two planar parts 26, 27, Fig. 5, enclosing an angleof about 110 degrees. The part 27 provides the desired taper. Both parts are provided with conductive fingers 28 which contact the sides of the guide. The termination is located in the guide by means of a pair of brass angle members 29, 30. In a modification (shown in Fig. 3), the taper is provided by a wedge-shaped brass member 34 attached to the terminating plate 12. The sides of the member 34 are spaced from the waveguide walls by thin studs of insulating material (not shown). A fixed termination may be used. The taper has the effect of surpressing the H 11 and other unwanted modes.
