813,770. Lapping. BRITISH TIMKEN LTD. Nov. 28, 1957 [Feb. 22, 1957], No. 5966/57. Class 60. A method of lapping the thrust rib 17, Fig. 1, of a race member 7 of a tapered roller bearing to a predetermined profile comprises applying axial pressure to the bearing and oscillating a carrying device or cage 12 in which are only three equally-spaced tapered lapping rollers 14 having their large ends 16 formed to a predetermined profile corresponding to that desired to be lapped on the thrust rib, the rollers travelling through at least 120 degrees about the bearing axis, first in one direction and then in the other. As applied to a double row taper roller bearing, the race members 7, 9 are held stationary by fitting closely on a coaxial shoulder on an upstanding pillar 1, and the intermediate member 8 positioned between the members 7, 9 with a clearance between itself and the pillar. Cages 12, 12a are disposed between the members and axial pressure applied to the bearing by means of springs, screws or, as shown, a sleeve 24 and weight 25. The lapping rollers 14, 14a are spaced 120 degrees apart around the cages and are free to move axially so that, during oscillation of the race member 8, their large ends 16, 16a, to which an abrasive medium is applied and which are spherically, concisely or otherwise shaped, lap the thrust ribs 17, 23 of the members 7, 9. The member 8 has a screw thread or groove 26 on its outer surface engaged by a cord oscillated either by having its free ends held in the hands and alternately pulled or by being formed as a belt 35, Fig. 6, which is driven by a pulley 34 from a motor 28 and crank mechanism 31, 32 so as to rotate the member 8 through an angle sufficient for the rollers to travel at least 120 degrees about the bearing axis, the arrangement may be such that the member 8 rotates one or more complete revolutions in opposite directions. Compressible pads 18 of felt or like material may be fitted in parallel holes between the rollers or in a separate ring to polish and wipe abrasive material from the ribs and trucks of the race members. In another arrangement, the member 8a, Fig. 7, may be held stationary by being keyed to the pillar 1, and the members 7a, 9a clamped together by rings 39, 40 and supported by an anti-friction bearing 45 on the base 38 of the pillar, the members 7a, 9a being oscillated by a cord or belt engaging grooves 41 on the periphery of the upper ring 39, axial pressure can be applied to the bearing members by means of the bolts 46 clamping the rings 39, 40 together. Single-row taper roller bearings may be mounted in pairs on the pillar and the adjacent members clamped together by a ring which is grooved to receive a cord or belt to enable it to be oscillated.
