591,291. Motor-vehicle driving-mechanism. TIMKEN-DETROIT AXLE CO. March 20, 1945, No. 7017. Convention date, March 1, 1944. [Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (iv)] [Also in Group XXIV] Motor-vehicle driving- mechanism comprises a change-speed gear, a differential driven directly from the change-speed gear and which drives wheel axles arranged in a plane above the axis of the differential, and a power take-off shaft driven from the gearbox input shaft, the whole being mounted in a common housing divided into compartments. A second power take-off provided with a disconnectible drive may be arranged to drive an auxiliary such as an oil pump. The clutch shaft 14, Figs. 1 and 2, projects into the housing 11 and is coupled by a splined collar 68 to the input shaft 56 of the gear-box. The shaft 56 has splines 59 on which are slidably mounted two gear clusters 60, 61. The gear cluster 60 comprises two gears 80, 81 and is moved by a selector fork 84, and the gear cluster 61 comprises two gears 85, 86 moved by a selector fork 88 (see Group XXIV). The gears 80, 81, 85 and 86 are engageable with the gears 74-77 respectively, to give 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th speeds, the gears 74-77 all being last on tne shaft 71, which terminates in a bevel pinion 73 in the compartment 50 which houses the differential. Reverse gear is obtained by interposing an idler pinion (not shown) between the gears 81 and 74. The bevel pinion 73 drives through the differential the pair of sleeves 136 mounted on the shaft 118, each sleeve 136 being formed with a pinion 138 in engagement with a gear rim 176 shrunk on to a hub 175 secured to each half-shaft 173. Each sleeve 136 terminates in a brake drum 145, the associated brakes 156 being operable independently so as to assist the normal steering of the vehicle. Projecting from one side of the compartment 11 is a housing 29 for the power take-off shaft 31 which is driven at its inner end by bevel gears 36, 65 and carries a pulley 39 at its outer end. Provision is also made for driving an auxiliary, e.g., an oil pump 209, from the pinion 68, by a disconnectible drive comprising a gear 224 slidably mounted on the splined sleeve 217 which is rotatably mounted by means of roller bearings on the fixed spindle 207. Fast with the sleeve 217 is a pair of cams 216 which actuate the oil pump 209 through levers terminating in rollers 215 bearing against the cams. The compartment 50 is filled with oil through an orifice 193 to the level O. The bearing 48 at one end of the gear box shaft 56 is lubricated from a trough 194, and the bearing 58 at the other end by a trough 195. The outer bearings of the power take-off shaft 31, of the half-shafts 173 and of the differential sleeves 136 are provided with oil seals, and the outer bearings of the half-shafts are lubricated by oil passing through passage ways (not shown) adjacent the inner bearings 184.
