In order to subdue the noise caused when the shoes 12 and 14 of an internal shoe drum brake are retracted, a partition 40 is located in the hydraulic cylinder between the two pistons 22 and 24, the partition 40 having a restricted opening 44 therethrough at its highest point to enable fluid to pass from the chamber 43 on the side into which the inlet port 48 opens to the other side. When the shoes are retracted the restricted opening 44 prevents too rapid a return movement of the shoes. As shown in Fig. 6, the partition 140 is in the form of a cup-shaped member sufficiently flexible to enable it to be fitted into a groove 142 in the cylinder wall. The restricted opening 144 is located near to the air bleed-port 150. Specification 750,598 has identical drawings with claims relating particularly to the disposition of the shoe linings.
