The invention comprises compounds of formula FORM:0920400/IV(a)/1 where R1 is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon radical having up to 12 carbon atoms which can contain O, S, SO2 or halogen atoms, R2 is hydrogen, halogen, a C1 to C4 alkyl, alkoxy, alkylsulphonyl, alkanoyloxy, a -alkoxyalkoxy, aralkoxy or hydroxyl group, R3 is hydrogen, halogen, C1 to C4 alkyl, alkoxy or alkylsulphonyl, and X is O, S, SO, SO2 or NR4 where R4 is C1 to C4 alkyl. The compounds are prepared by reacting a compound of formula FORM:0920400/IV(a)/2 where R12 is the same as R2 with the exception of a hydroxyl group, with one of the following FORM:0920400/IV(a)/3 where Y is a hydrocarbon radical and Z is chlorine, bromine or an acetoxy group. The compound also may be prepared by condensing a compound of formula FORM:0920400/IV(a)/4 with an oxo compound of formula R111=O where R111 is a divalent hydrocarbon radical which may contain O or halogen, and reducing the product to obtain a compound of the invention. The compounds may be converted into salts with inorganic or organic bases. Examples are given. The above compounds may be mixed with starch, lactose, stearic acid, talcum and magnesium stearate and formed into capsules, powders or tablets, or mixed with cocoa butter and formed into suppositories.
