Improvements in or relating to abutment plate for rails and rail fastening means including said plate

A rail flange is maintained in the lateral direction by a metal plate P carrying a projection 4 which engages in a recess 5 in a concrete sloper T. A spring clip A which bears at one end on the rail flange has a notch 17 at the other end which engages a longitudinal median rib 9 on the plate. The clip and plate are clamped on the sleeper by a bolt B. To accommodate varying track widths plates P of differing lengths are used, the distance between the axis of the bolt aperture 8 and the abutment edge 6 remaining constant so that a single size of clip A may always be used. The distance varied is that between the aperture 8 and the projection 4 and a passage 10 through the sleeper is wide enough to allow the bolt to be displaced within the limits of track widths. Engagement of a square-sectioned portion 15 of the hammer-head bolt B with a mortise 13 in an inverted U-section reinforcement 11 prevents rotation of the bolt whilst allowing lateral movement of the bolt along the passage 10. This arrangement is replaced by a coach screw when a wooden sleeper is used. The projection 4 may be integral with the plate or, as shown, comprise a block of elastomeric material.
