A spot facing machine comprises a table 10 for supporting a flanged workpiece 35, a vertically sliding head 19 carrying a cutter 18 to overhang the flange and manually-operable means 25, 26 for lowering the cutter while it is being driven. Rotation of a handle 34 rotates the gears 25, 26 meshing with racks 24 in columns 20, 21 supporting the head 19. The depth of cut is determined by a screw 34a. The cutter is rotated by a motor 11 through gearing 14, 15, 16. A projection 18a engages the hole to locate the cutter.
