1,078,679. Boots &c. F. R. RIEK. Dec. 31, 1964 [Dec. 31, 1963], No. 53047/64. Heading A3B. An anti-splash heel tread has a planar tread surface A with an arcuate rear edge B, a channel or groove 2 with an arcuate rear edge and a movable strip or flap fixed to the tread which, when the tread surface is in contact with the ground, occupies the groove or channel and does not stand proud of the tread surface, while when the tread surface is brought out of contact with the ground, the strip or flap emerges from the groove or channel and stands proud of the tread surface to prevent splashing. In a first embodiment (Fig. 2) a strip of circular cross-section is joined to the edges of the channel 2 by thin flexible webs 3. In a second embodiment the groove has an arcuate rear edge and a rectilinear front edge and is filled by a flap which is pivoted to the front edge of the groove. In a third embodiment the channel contains a resilient hollow tube which normally stands proud of the tread surface but which is deformed to occupy the channel when the tread surface is in contact with the ground.
