A sweep voltage generator particularly for a cathode-ray tube comprises a series resonant circuit 35, 36 shunted by a switching device such as vacuum tube 39 and a further capacitance 50, of lower value than 36, the circuit being chargeable from a power source via a resistive path 38 having a greater resistance than device 39. When a positive pulse is fed to the grid of tube 39, capacitance 50 of the deflection plates 41 of the cathode-ray tube 42 discharges resonantly at a frequency determined by the constants of components 35, 36. At the end of the pulse, tube 39 becomes non- conductive so that the circuit re-charges resonantly at a frequency determined primarily by 50, 35 giving a substantially linear portion of a sinusoidal wave which is fed to deflection plates 41. The sweep amplitude may be adjusted by changing the duration of pulse 44 or by adjustment of the resonant frequency or supply voltage. Expressions are given for the effect of damping.
