A new or improved apparatus for marking hot metal billets and other hot metal bodies

In a machine for welding marking tallies to hot metal billets or the like, a body carrying one or more electrodes is reciprocable towards and away from a billet by an operator located adjacent a part of the body remote from the hot billet, and such reciprocating movement of the body operates a magazine to feed a tally into position for welding. The machine is traversible along rails 13 past the ends 16 of billets 15 lying side-by-side on a cooling bed 14. The body 17 of the machine to which two electrodes 20 are secured is reciprocable on wheels 18 by a handle 64 by an operator who is protected by a transparent or other shield 65. As the body 17 is pushed towards the billet a tally support platform 32 on which a talley is supported in upright position (see Fig. 2) engages the end 16 of a billet 15 and collapses a spring-loaded toggle 35 by which it is connected to the body 17 to allow the electrodes 20 to weld the tally to the billet. The movement of the body 17 relative to the platform 32 causes a link 38 to effect angular movement of an arm 22 pivoted at its lower end to the body 17 and carrying at its upper end a guide shoot 29 and a rotary magazine 24 having slots 25 for receiving the tallies. The arm 22 raises the shoot 29 clear of the electrodes 20 as the electrodes 20 approach the billet. During the return movement of the body 17, the arm 22 pivots to lower the shoot and a spring member 40 actuates a ratchetwheel 46 to cause the magazine 24 to rotate and deliver a tally to the shoot 29. The magazine 24 is removable from its shaft 23 to facilitate loading. Welding current passes between the two electrodes 20.
