Projectile 1 for rifled guns has a tapered base portion 2 to receive a non-metallic driving band 5, the portion 2 being circumferentially ribbed over the major portion of its length to prevent relative axial movement between the band and the projectile in the gun barrel. The ribs may be formed by screw-threads and longitudinal ribs are superimposed on the circumferential ribs to form knurling. The inner surface of the band may be embedded in the ribbing. Material such as vulcanized fibre, nylon or a more brittle synthetic resin may be used to make the band, which may have a circumferential flange 8 to provide a ramming stop. The taper of the base 2 and inner bore of the band may have a semi-angle of 7 degrees.
