In a copying lathe including a longitudinally movable carriage 7, Figs. 1 and 4, movable on a bed 3, and a tool slide 33 movable on the carriage towards and away from the work 16, the slide movement is controlled by a feeler 24 co-operating with a template 27 which actuates a spring- urged valve spool 21. Carriage 7, Fig. 4, has screwed thereto a piston 9 which slides in a bore 12 in slide 33, the weight of the latter being balanced by a spring 68. Slide 33 moves along an axis 17, which may be perpendicular to or at an acute angle with respect to the axis 49 of the workpiece. Piston 9 has a bore 35 which carries a slidable pressure differential slide 36 having fluid control edges 55, 57 and a throttle spool 69 is slidable in a bore 85 of slide 36. Fluid is pumped by a pump 28, Fig. 4, through conduits 30, 23, 51 into annular chambers 54 and 65 through bore 87 into chamber 63, thus lifting slide 36 to close control edge 55. Fluid passes. through throttle slots 90 into chamber 59, and through bores 50 into piston chamber 41, conduit 64, and annular chamber 58. Pressure in chamber 41 rises and slide 33 is moved down until feeler 24 abuts templet 27, spool 21 moves downwardly and fluid is discharged passed the top of the spool. In a modification, Fig. 8, tools 15 and 82 are controlled successively by templets 27, 77 respectively and when tool 82 is to cut, with carriage 7 moving opposite to arrow 62, spool 21 is pressed downwardly by a spring-urged lever 74, when released from a cam 80, to allow slide 33 to move upwardly until feeler 84 engages templet 77. In a further modification, chamber 58 is connected directly to annular chamber 42, chamber 41 is connected to chamber 65 and chamber 59 is connected to annulus 42.
