1, 040, 291. Practising artificial respiration. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Oct. 8, 1962 [July 6, 1961], No. 24449/61. Heading AST. Apparatus for practising mouth-to-mouth or mouth-to-nose artificial respiration comprises a mouth unit 1 including an upper part 2 for use by the person practising and connected to a tube 19 representing an artificial nose and to a tube 21 connected to lung-simulating bags 23 and a lower mouthpiece 8 or mask to be held in or over the mouth of the person acting as patient the tube leading to the lung-simulating bags being so connected to a wire frame 12 that it will be constricted by the frame if the head of the person acting as patient is incorrectly tilted. The upper mouthpiece is bell-shaped and open at the top to represent a mouth and lips. The lower mouthpiece or mask (not shown) has an aperture 11 communicating with atmosphere so that the person acting as patient can breathe naturally, a rubber diaphragm 6 separating the aperture from the upper mouthpiece so that air cannot be exchanged between the person practising and the person acting as patient. The interior of the upper mouthpiece is also connected with a bladder 25 representing the stomach, by a tube 21, representing the gullet. The tubes 21, 24 are secured by adhesive tape 26 to the wire frame 12 which extends from the upper mouthpiece.
