Apparatus for incorporating, after a break, a new glass filament n into a strand s of glass filaments comprises an inclined guide 4 or 22 for the new filament n, a joining drum 5 for connecting the filament n in the strand s, means for transferring the newly-formed filament from the guide 4 or 22 on to the periphery of the drum 5 and means for moving and guiding the filament n along the drum 5 into the sizing position for all filaments, as at a sizing guide 10, at which position the individual filaments are formed into a continuous filament strand which is wound on a spindle 3. The filaments a1 to an are inclined outwardly and to one side, as at 2, of the filament producing apparatus 1 to meet over the sizing guide 10 where they are sprayed with size from a hopper 12a through tube 12. After a break, a drop t is formed and pulls a new filament n, both falling vertically to be guided by the trough 4 or 22 towards the joining drum 5, which is angled and rotated so that the filament moves along the drum of the signing guide 10. As shown in Fig. 2, the transferring means comprises a worm 6 and cams 7 on the adjacent face 8 of the drum 5, the guide 4 having an angled end portion 9 to lead the filament into the bite of the worm 6 which is preferably rotated at a slower speed than the drum 5 on the same axis. As shown in Fig. 3, the transferring means comprises a core 15 formed on the end of drum 5 to lead the filament into the drum, a washer 16 and an inclined baffle plate 17 ensuring movement towards the drum. As shown in Fig. 5, the transferring PICT:0959917/C1/1 PICT:0959917/C1/2 PICT:0959917/C1/3 PICT:0959917/C1/4 means comprises an apron 23 over the drum into which the guide 22 leads the filament n, at least one nozzle 24 projecting a cleaning agent jet in the direction of arrow B to accelerate the drawing of the filament which clings to the drum 5 while the drop t and the end of the filament are thrown out of the bottom of the apron 23. The apparatus may also include a scraper 13 for drum 5 and a spray 14 for cleaning agent for removal of filament ends; a friction roller 18 to assist winding of the filament on to drum 5, in which case the strand S is further away from drum 5 and a slowly rotating lifter device 19 is provided to bring the filament n nearer the strand S. To assist movement of the filament into the guide 10, a filament guide 11, Fig. 2, or 30, Fig. 7, may be provided, and the guide 30, which is then rotated, may have notches 37 at spaced intervals as shown or may be plain or may be on the same axis and rotate with the sizing guide 10 instead of being above as shown.
