A shaft kiln with a cooling system at the shaft bottom comprises two opposing offtakes 13 which open into the shaft closely above the grate 9 and through which the cooling air admitted through the pipe 12, after having cooled the bottom end of the bed, enters chamber 14 lined with refractory bricks, and is then discharged through cyclones 15 into exhaust ducts 16 from which it can be recovered. To promote efficiency the cooling air must be abstracted before it reaches the firing zones 6, 7 but beforehand it must cool intensely the charge, which it does by moving through cracks in the bed caused by teeth in the grate 9.
