A transfer apparatus whereby articles may be lifted to an elevated conveyer system comprises a carrier 4 provided with an endless conveyer 9 and which is raisable from a loading position adjacent an endless conveyer 11 to close an opening formed between spaced endless conveyers 1, 2 of the elevated conveyer system. The opening is normally closed by a separate conveyer 3 which is displaceable by the carrier 4 when the latter is raised. The separate conveyer 3 and the carrier 4 are respectively provided with endless conveyer belts 8, 9 in engagement with rollers 6 provided at opposite ends of the respective frameworks to be driven by the endless belts 1, 2, 11 when in alignment therewith. The separate conveyer 3 may be displaceable vertically (Fig. 1) by said carrier or alternatively (Fig. 2, not shown) may have roller means (16) for engagement with a guideway (15) on the carrier whereby to pivot said separate conveyer 3 about an axis (18) clear of the opening. The carrier is raised along a shaft 10 by an endless chain 13 driven by an electric motor 12.
