A thermal insulating material consisting of calcium silicate potassium titanate or zirconium oxide is uniformly heated at a temperature at or approaching its temperature of intended use until the chemical and physical changes associated with shrinking at that temperature have been substantially completed. Calcium silicate reinforced with 15 wt. per cent asbestos e.g. amosite, chrysotile, crocidolite, anthophyllite, tremolite or actinolite, fibres, mineral wool, or glass fibres, is heated at 850-950‹ C.
