984,738. Centrifugal separators. WESTFALIA SEPARATOR A.G. Jan. 23, 1964 [Jan. 26, 1963], No. 3047/64. Heading B2P. A centrifuge for separating solid or liquid material from a liquid comprises a control chamber 11 located adjacent the drum axis, means for applying liquid to the control chamber, a conduit 12, 12a connecting the chamber 11 to the interior of a sediment chamber 1 and arranged so that displacement in the free surface of the liquid in the chamber 1, caused by the deposition of sediment therein, causes corresponding displacement of the liquid in the chamber 11, the latter displacement being used to actuate a pressure responsive device 19 to provide a signal to indicate when the sediment chamber has filled up and/or to operate a control system for commencing the discharge of the sediment from the chamber. The liquid to be treated is fed in through a pipe 4 and the clarified liquid flows from the central part 6 of the separating chamber via passages 7 into a chamber 8 where it is removed by a skimming member 9 leading into a conduit 10. The chamber 11 is connected to the chamber 1 via passages 12 and a ring passage 12a. Purified liquid constantly flows into the chamber 11 via a bore 14 communicating the passage 15 the member 9 to a passage 13 in the member 17, the passage 13 communicating via a passage 18 to the device 19. Alternatively, the member 17 may be replaced by a float, whilst passage 13 may be connected with the untreated liquid inlet pipe 4 via a bore or with an inlet for an auxiliary liquid. In operation, the levels of the free surface of the liquid in the chambers 1, 11 are at the same distance from the centrifuge axis. As soon as the separated material covers the opening 16 of the ring passage 12a, the free surface of the liquid in the chamber 11 is displaced until it reaches the passage 13 into which static pressure is thereby created opposing the flow of liquid through the bore 14. The static pressure is transmitted via the passage 18 to the device 19 which causes a valve 2 to uncover openings 3 for the discharge of the separated material.
