A lethal bait for protecting buildings against damage by vermin (e.g. mice and rats) comprises a food bait material and alphachloralose. The food bait may be oatmeal, maize meal, wheat flour, corn starch, sago flour, chocolate, sugar, tomato, ground nut oil, corn oil, or lard. Optional ingredients are inert materials such as china clay, talc and whiting, and colouring matter such as carbon black or prussian blue. The preparations may be in the form of powder, contact dust, granulate, pill, pellet, tablet, paste, or coating (e.g. on wood, paper, cardboard, polystyrene, bread, cake crumbs, canned herring or cat food).
