In a piston and cylinder assembly, the pistonrod 6 is made of plastics material containing axially parallel reinforcing filaments and the cylinder wall 1 is made of plastics material containing axially parallel and tangential reinforcing filaments. The plastics material may be epoxy or polyester resins and the filaments may be carbon or glass fibres. A piston 7 is secured to the rod 6. The cylinder wall 1 is clamped between a base 2 and a head 3 by tie rods 4. All parts of the assembly are made of plastics material and those parts other than the piston-rod and cylinder wall may or may not be reinforced.
