1329263 Copying by scanning XEROX CORP 11 Sept 1970 [18 Sept 1969] 43592/70 Heading H4F A data printer which may be used for both alphanumeric and fascimile reproductions comprises a plurality of scanning electrode units 10 each having ten electrode elements which are selectively energized by signals from a coding matrix 30 which receives its input over a transmission line or from a magnetic tape or disc file 34 or a T.V. camera 36 or a keyboard 38, the input to the coding matrix 30 containing an input as to whether alphanumeric or facsimile information is to be printed. For alphanumeric printing seven adjacent electrode elements are used to scan the reproduction, the three non- used electrode elements automatically providing the spacing between adjacent lines. After one scan by the unit 10 the motor 42 advances the reproduction via rollers 48, 50, and the coding matrix 30 receives a further alphanumeric/ fascimile input. For fascimile printing each electrode element is used in turn, the reproduction remaining stationary for ten scans one using each electrode element, after which it is again moved on by motor 42 and coding matrix 30 receives another alphanumeric/facsimile input. A cathode-ray tube 41 may be used for visual inspection of the information to be printed, and the scanning electrode unit 10 may be coupled to the coding matrix 30 by an arrangement of plates or blades on a stationary electrode structure which has parallel linear surfaces which contact the unit 10. The paper on which the reproduction is printed may be electrolytic; electrographic or electroresistive. A timing track on the electrode unit 10 may be referenced to a commutator on the motor 42 to reduce jitter problems with facsimile printing.
