Heading B1L Spent active charcoal passes continuously into reactor 1 through pipe 6 while hot fluidizing gas at a constant temperature in the range 600-1200‹C enters through tube 9 and passes up through perforated plate 2. The charcoal in space 4 within slotted cylindrical plate 3 is. therein dried and heated under slight agitation and eventually passes through slot 8 into annular outer space 5, and thence to outlet 7, the temperature in the region of outlet being kept constant in the range 500- 1000‹C. Water is added to the fluidizing gas, e.g. combustion gases, to control the temperature thereof, while the temperature of the bed material may also be controlled by recycling charcoal from outlet 7 to inlet 6.
