Apparatus comprises a tundish whose roof is tightly sealed to the open tundish top so that a positive pressure is maintained in the tundish chamber. In the tundish bottom wall is at least one nozzle distributing molten metal to the casting unit. At least one burner head is mounted on the roof to supply a combustible gas-air mixture into the tundish. A burner block with a central passage is connected with the head to fan out the burning gases from the burner and establish a short flame pattern.
