The winch is driven by a single motor via a selector mechanism transmitting the power to one drum or the other, each drum having a brake released when the motor is switched on or the selector is actuated. The motor (10) has an electrical interlock, operated dependent on the position of the selector gears (14, 14') in the gear trains to the drums (22, 22'), and only released when one of these gears is engaged. The brakes (23, 23') can be mounted on layshafts (18, 18') in the gear trains and permanently coupled to the respective drums. Where the brakes are released by solenoids, these can be electrically interlocked with the motor, so that the interlock is only released when one of the selector gears is engaged.
