Heavy vehicle driving axle housings are normally hot forged in two pieces which are then welded together and finally oil hardened and tempered. By using a cold forging technique, the completed housing, welded up from two parts in the same way, can then be heated by high frequency induction heating and water quenched, to give a harder material with less cost and smaller metal losses in processing. A low-carbon, low-alloy steel can have a final yield point between 50 and 80 kp/mm2, and a tensile strength between 80 and 108 kp/mm2.
