The boundary layer thickness is reduced and the surface contact area increased by providing a number of open cells on the side of the dividing surface in contact with the fluid; a free jet of the fluid is forced under pressure into each of these cells, with a velocity component perpendicular to the surface, pref. with the jet directed perpendicular to the surface. Pref. the heat transfer surface, with square, circular, triangular etc. cells formed on it by upstanding partitions, forms one wall of a turbulence chamber; inlet pipes passing through the opposite wall of the chamber lead into each of the cells, discharging their jets directly onto the surface.
