Apparatus for the treatment of sewage by the activated sludge process comprises a tank 1 which is circular in plan and subdivided by a partition 2 into an aeration chamber 3 and a clarification chamber 4 with discharge overflow 12. An aerating centrifuge 5 is equipped with a riser 6 which communicates via pipes 14, 18 and adjustable overflow devices 16, 19 in a sludge trap 13 and the clarification chamber 4, respectively. A pipe 15 connects the aeration chamber 3 and the sludge trap 13, and tubes 22 connect the aeration and clarification chambers for flow of liquid and sludge. In use, the operation of the aerator 5 causes sludge from the surface thereof in the clarification chamber 4 and liquid from sludge trap 13 to be sucked into the riser 6 and activated sludge and sewage to be carried along pipe 15 from the aeration chamber 3 to the sludge trap 13.
