1281901 Television ASSOCIATED RESEARCH LABORATORIES (PTY) Ltd 11 July 1969 [19 July 1968 12 March 1969] 35062/69 Heading H4F [Also in Division G5] Questions, answers and consequence signal information comprising format information and/or a message are transmitted electromagnetically from a central station to remote student stations each of which includes means to present questions to students, to compare students responses with the correct answer and to control presentation of consequence signals to the students. In a preferred embodiment Fig. 1 (not shown) a television studio 19 has in addition to a microphone 1, camera 2 and video tape recorder 3 a teleprinter 8 connected via an encoder 9 and a magnetic core store 10 to a processor unit 7 whereby answers to audibly and/or visibly presented questions may be repeatedly encoded and transmitted as a string of up to 25 characters in a 6-bit code on the first 25 lines of the first field of a 625 line interlaced TV picture. The television signals are transmitted through free space or coaxial cable to a plurality of student stations each of which includes a TV set 23. The top 25 lines may be hidden. A sequential character selector 26, 28 feeds a single answer character at a time via a serial-to-parallel converter 29 to a comparator 32. A keyboard 33 on which students indicate their answers is connected to the comparator 32. The arrangement is such that a character-by-character comparison is effected until either an incorrect character is keyed or an end-of-response format character following the coded answer is detected. A lamp 41 is illuminated for every correct character and is made to flash when the complete answer is correctly keyed in. Counters 46 and 49 count the number of correct and incorrect answers respectively. By depressing a reset key 42 the student may make a further attempt within a given overall response period but the counters only register the first result. Answers may range from multi-character names for example of people or places to single character indications of selections from multi-choice questions. In modifications, a blanking arrangement may be included whereby the characters of an answer transmitted as the second set of 25 lines of the picture in visually recognizable form are progressively unblanked on the screen as correct responses are keyed-in, a complete answer or message may be unblanked together as soon as a correct answer has been keyed-in, the answers may be encoded on to the audio signal or transmitted as a separate signal, single character answers may be encoded as a timed pulse relative to the synch. pulse, a light pen may be provided for students to indicate responses, several students may be associated with each TV set each student having a separate keyboard 33, and totalizers may be provided which are connected by telex link back to the television studio from where the aggregate of the responses may be transmitted immediately.
