The traverse of each guide bar 2 of a warp knitting machine is determined by the movement imparted to a plate 4 containing rows of holes 7 and connected to the guide bar by a sector 3. The plate 4 is moved first in one direction and then in the other by each in turn of a pair of oscillating arms 10, 11 suitably oscillated by being coupled by links to cam followers deriving their motion from cams on a cam shaft. The arms are provided with slots 19 which contain studs 20 capable of being projected into a hole in one of the rows in the plate 4. Consequently by means of an electro-mechanical programming device a stud in one of the arms is caused to project and engage a hole 7 to move the plate 4 and guide bar 2 first in one direction whereupon it is disengaged and a stud in the other arm is projected to engage a hole 7 to cause movement of plate 4 and bar 2 in the opposite direction. When the guide bar is to remain stationary a locking device 38 engages the plate 4 and holds it immobile. Alternatively the plate 4 may be caused to move vertically under the influence of a two arm lever centrally pivoted having studs for selectively engaging the holes in the plate, Fig. 8, not shown. A slotted plate secured to the plate 4 engaging a cam follower on the end of the guide bar serves to transpose the vertical motion of the plate to horizontal motion of the guide bar.
