A chain knitting machine e.g. a Raschelle machine has the weft yarns inserted by yarn guides carried on a slide which is pneumatically projected along the guide tubes extending across the width of the knit. Pref. several inlet and outlet valves are provided to supply and exhaust compressed air from the tube and the guide tube has a longitudinally extending slit through which a connecting arm secured to the slide extends the connecting arm carrying a pair of yarn guides externally of the tube. Pref. the slit is covered by an elastic strip to provide a seal. Several tubes may be supported between any flanges to provide an assembly which can be selectively rotated to bring a selected slide an associated yarn guide into a weft inserting posn. The device is simple and can operate at high speeds and is readily adaptable for use with different knitted patterns and knitted webs of different widths.
