Cpds. of formulae (I) and (II): (where R1-R5 are H or aliphatic or aromatic gps.; Y is halogen; R6 and R7 are H or aliphatic or aromatic gps.; or NR6R7 is a heterocyclic ring; X is an equiv. of an anion) are prepd. by reacting a cpd. (III): with an acid halide of H3PO3, H3PO4, H2CO3, (COOH)2, H2SO3 or H2SO4 and R6R7NCHO to give (II), which can then be saponified to (I) in known manner. (I) and (II) are inters. for pharmaceuticals, dyes (esp. polymethines useful as photographic optical sensitisers), pesticides and perfumes.
