Method of reducing the viscosity of kaolin in a mud contg. 5-60% solids by hydrothermal treatment comprises heating the mud in a reaction zone for 1-60 mins. at 200-460 degrees C at a pressure of 700 kg/cm2 of mud in the reaction zone. Process controls particle size of kaolin flakes and their distribution.
