High-power L-band microstrip matched load - has dielectric absorbers between mumetal outer foils and inner metal strip

The microstrip matched load (e.g. for L-band and peak powers of 2kw) consists of a metal box whose lower half (1) has a trench running along it and whose upper half (2) forms a screw-on cover plate. A first mu-metal foil (3) runs along the bottom of the trench and a second mu-metal foil (4) covers the inside surface of the cover plate. A more solid metal strip (5) is situated between the two foils and separated from them by two slabs of absorber (7, 8). The absorbers are epoxy resin loaded with iron powder. The central metal strip has a length less than one quarter of the wavelength and is connected at one end to a coaxial line inner conductor (6) which enters the box from below at right angles to the strip main axis. Matching is accomplished by displacing the centre strip.
