The e.m.f. between a reference electrode in the cell and a measuring electrode in the melt is currentlessly measured and the temp. of the melt is measured. The solid electrolyte is a ion-conductive metal nitride, mixed nitride and/or doped nitride, esp. AlN (contg. up to 12% oxygen), the reference electrode is a metal-metal nitride mixt., e.g., Al/AlN, Cr/Cr nitride, Ta/Ta nitride, Si/Si nitride, B/B nitride, V/V nitride, or Nb/Nb nitride, esp. Al/AlN, and the measuring electrode is made of a refractory metal, cermet or non-metal, esp. an aluminised Ir wire.
