The starting materials are comminuted (2 mm) and leached with a HCl soln. in an amt. of 0.1-6. g. HCl per g. of dried starting material at a temp. the b.pt., under normal press. The concn. of the soln. is 60-200 g. HCl perlitre. Under these conditions Ni and Cu pass into the soln. nearly quantitatively (=90%) whilst the recovery of Mn and CO amounts to 20%, and that of Fe to 7% only. This preliminary sepn. facilitates the subsequent isolation of these metals by solvent extraction, ion exchange or precipitation.
