1426843 Casting-machines SOC MINERARIA E METALLURGICA DI PERTUSOLA SpA 18 March 1974 [23 March 1973] 11858/74 Heading B3F Apparatus for casting metal balls comprises a rotatable plate 2 provided with a circular groove 7 in the bottom of which are holes 15 leading to respective underlying dies formed of two halves 16 and 17, at least one of the halves being movable radially to open the die, and means 8 for introducing molten metal into the groove 7. The means 8 includes a constant head tank 28 and a channel 31 which directs the metal into the groove 7. In front of the end of the channel there is a stationary barrier 32 which blocks the flow of metal along the groove in a direction contrary to the rotational direction of the plate 2 (the plate 2 and dies move from right to left in Fig. 2). The metal in the groove 7 passes through the holes 15 into the dies. After each die has moved through about 300 degrees from its point of filling, the die half 17 is moved radially inward against the action of a spring 18 by means of a wheel 19 bearing against a stationary cam 20. Between the upper face of the die and the lower face of the plate 2 there is a blade 21 provided with a hole (22) which, when the two die halves 16 and 17 are pressed against each other, is exactly in register with a corresponding hole 15. After the die half 17 has begun its movement away from the die half 16, the blade 21 is also moved in a radially inward direction to sever the connection between the solidified metal in the groove 7 and the cast metal ball to allow the ball to fall out of the die. A punch 25 is then moved down by a cam 26 to push away any metal which may have remained in the hole (22) of the blade 21. A scraping knife (14) removes any solidified metal in the groove 7 before that portion of the groove is again located under the pouring channel 31. The apparatus may be cooled by water contained in an annular groove outside the groove 7 and by water in a chamber defined by the upper surface of the plate 2 and a cover 10.
