Neutral aromatic bis-sulphates prepn. - from metal phenoxides and chlorosulphates

Neutral opt. symmetrical aromatic bis-sulphates or formula (I):-Z-O-SO2-OAr1-X-Ar2-O-SO2-O-Z (I) (where Ar1 and Ar2, the same or different, are opt. substd. aromatic radicals; X is a chemical bond or a gp. linking radicals Ar1 and Ar2; Z is an opt. substd. phenyl radical of type Ar'-X-Ar" in which Ar' and Ar" are defined as Ar1 and Ar2) are prepd. by reacting a metal deriv. of an aromatic cpd. contg. 1 or 2 phenol gps. with an aromatic chlorosulphate contg. 2 or 1 terminal chlorosulphate gps. in equimolar proportions w. r. t. reactive gps. in an anhydrous solvent. Reaction is pref. under an atmos. of dry inertgas, in, as solvent, o-dimethoxybenzene or veratrole, nitrobenzene, benzonitrile, alkylsulhpones, aliphatic nitriles or tert-aromatic amines. (I) are used as plasticiser in thermoplastic resins and as flame-retardants and antioxidants in plastics.
