1367988 Photo-electric profilometers ISHIKAWAJIMA-HARIMA JUKOGYO K K 8 June 1972 [8 June 1971] 26855/72 Heading G1A The surface profile of a member is determined by projecting an elongate light pattern on to the surface and detecting variations in the profile of the pattern by raster scanning it transversely to its length, generating a pulse at the brightest point of each line scan, and determining the temporal deviations of the pulses from their positions for a desired profile. As shown, Fig. 8, a strip of material is moved past a light source 2 which projects a bar shaped pattern 3 across the width of the strip. A television camera 4 is arranged to view the pattern in such a manner that curvature of the surface of strip 1 results in a lateral displacement of a portion of the viewed pattern. The camera scans the pattern transversely and the video signal is amplified (5) and applied to a pulse generator 6 which produces a pulse at the brightest point of each line scan. The video signal and pulses may be applied to a monitor (not shown) and the pulses occuring in successive lines are gated (7) into separate processing channels in which the deviation of the temporal position of the pulse from the predetermined position for a correct profile of the strip is determined by means of logic or arithmetic circuit 8, linear voltage time base 9 and deviation detecting circuit 10.
