One or more artificial sausage skins longitudinally collapsed in concertina formation ready for filling, are packed in a tube or between sheets of a flexible plastic matl., e.g. polythene, PVC, PVA, polypropylene, a partial vacuum being formed in the package and retained there by sealing the joints of the packaging matl. The partial vacuum pressure should not fall much below 0.4 atmos. and is pref. between 0.5 and 0.9 atmos. The plastic packaging matl. should have a permeability transmission rate of less than 1 cc/645 cm2/24 hours/atmos. to both air and water vapour. Used for collapsed sausage skins of artificial matl. such as regenerated cellulose, collagen, microporous thermoplastic etc. The moisture content of the sausage skin is retained within a range which prevents cracking and softening and overfilling. At the same time the skin is firmly retained in its collapsed form, without distortion by local pressure concentrations. The sealing of the package is pref. by heat-seaming joints in the matl. Removal of skins is facilitated by incorporating a tear strip in the package.
