The spindles have sections without screw threads which have shallow helical ribs. The matl. to be pressed e.g., paper pulp is continuously moved along the screw and this matl. is not subjected to rotating movement and to compression in the sections without screw thread. This facilitates longitudinal displacement of the matl. The matl. is fed into the press through a hopper at the end of the press housing. Pressure is exerted on the matl. by the friction of the housing walls which resists the transfer due to the rotating movement of the spindle. This friction opposes the rotating movement of the matl.
